Hi

This is my first post under my own brand of Coach Eric Wylie. There’s nowhere to hide! It’s so scary that it’s cool!

So why did I start a blog? Isn’t there enough junk on the internet already? Yes, I would offer there is a LOT of junk on the internet and that’s exactly why I’m doing this. I spend a lot of time digging through that junk with the intent of learning something new.

Frankly, I see that as part of my job…. filter through the crap so you don’t have to….

With that said, I will always include links so you can do your own reading if you find something interesting. Read more and come to your own conclusions. Do your own thinking.

That brings me to my first topic and article link.

What is illusory correlation?

Our brain likes patterns…. We like to bring order to our lives. Everything must make sense. The problem with that is life rarely makes sense and there is often no order to life going on around us.

Illusory correlation is when our brain forms a relationship between two separate variables (people, events, facts, etc.) when such a relationship doesn’t exist.

Check out this article. Be aware there is some potty language….

Carbs, Diet Cults & Broscience: A Look Into Fitness Fallibility

Can you think of any instance where you’ve connected two things together and then held on to those two things for dear life? We do that too. We make a connection and refuse to reconsider that connection, even in the face of contradictory evidence.

A perfect example are diet fads.

Paleo, ketogenic and several other diet programs claim carbs are bad, but if we look at Asian cultures, we see their diets are heavy on carbs, yet they tend to live longer AND live healthier than Westerners. What gives? Could it be the elimination of carbs is not a ‘smoking gun’ in losing weight? Some diets are lower in fat than carbs yet can produce similar results?

The point here is we want to draw a strong correlation between losing weight and eliminating carbs, yet there’s much more to our health stories!

So….

Is there anywhere in your fitness regime where you’re making strong assumptions?

What about in your finances or in your family time? Is there anything being taken for granted??

Are there any assumptions being made that need to be reconsidered??

What are you going to do this week to change your mindset?
